    Product and service (P&S) codes


    The 31 two digit product and service codes use in the Purchasing and Disposals Gazette are based on the Australian Standard Industrial Classification (ASIC) and allow for easy comparison of industry data. The codes are organised in ascending order from primary through manufacturing to service industry activities. The code and their descriptions are detailed below.

    PRIMARY SECTOR

    01 Agricultural produce, unprocessed - animals, fruit, vegetables, cereal grains.

    02 Services to agriculture - sheep shearing, aerial spraying, plant quarantine, wool classing.

    03 Forestry and logging products, un-processed and forestry services - logging, tree-felling, timber railway sleepers, afforestation.

    04 Fishing and hunting or trapping produce, unprocessed

    05 Mining produce - metallic minerals, coal, oil, gas, sand, gravel and stone.

    06 Services to mining - prospecting, exploration and drilling for oil, gas and minerals.



    MANUFACTURING SECTOR

    07 Food, beverages and tobacco manufactured - meat processing and products, processed fruit and vegetable products, bread, cakes, biscuit, sugar, confectionery, beer, wines, spirits and processed sea products e.g. fish, shellfish and seaweed.

    08 Textiles, clothing and footwear

    09 Wood(prepared), wood products and furniture (except sheet metal) and mattresses (except rubber)
    10 Paper, paper products, publishing and printing

    11 Chemicals, petroleum and coal refined or manufactured - adhesives, ammunition, cosmetics, fireworks, soaps, rubber, pesticides, paint and petrol.

    12 Non-metallic mineral products, manufactured - glass, clay and ceramic products, cement, concrete, plaster and stone products.

    13 Basic metal products, manufactured - iron and steel sheets, rail fastenings, chains, steel castings pipe fittings, refined and smelted products, rolled drawn and metal products.

    14 Fabricated metal products - hand tools, carports, fly-screen doors, metal sheds, cans, sheet metal furniture, cutlery, springs and bolts.

    15 Transport equipment - motor vehicles and parts (not tyres, see Code 20), trailers, caravans, aircraft, rockets, ships, railway stock, bicycles and wheel-barrows.

    16 Photographic, professional and scientific equipment - photocopy and facsimile machines, cameras, aircraft instruments, telescopes, microscopes, surgical equipment and laboratory equipment.

    17 Electrical equipment and hardware, household appliances - computer software (off the shelf, see Code 27), audio equipment, radio and television receivers, refrigerators and household appliances, water heaters, batteries, electric and telephone cable and wire, lighting equipment, solar panels and wind generators.

    18 Computer, office equipment, and electrical equipment not elsewhere classified - computer and peripherals (purchase and lease), electronic office machines (see also Code 16), satellites, radio and television transmitting equipment, television cameras, picture tubes and studio equipment, navigational aids, semi-conductors, telephones and switchboards, X-ray equipment and printed circuit boards.

    19 Industrial machinery and equipment - agricultural and industrial machinery, materials handling equipment, machine tools, saw blades, vernier callipers, jigs, dies, commercial heaters and coolers, outboard motors and mechanical typewriters.

    20 Leather, rubber, plastic and manufactured goods not elsewhere classified - tyres, tubes, abrasive papers, eye glasses, jewellery, brooms, brushes, sports equipment, advertising signs, pens, writing equipment, pianos and umbrellas.


    SERVICES SECTOR

    21 Electricity, gas, water, sewerage and drainage - municipal charges for these services, (not construction, see Code 22).

    22 Construction and construction services - new works repairs and maintenance of public facilities including roads, dams, pylons, towers, housing, building and hospitals, (not architectural, engineering or surveying consultancies, see Code 27)

    23 Automotive services - automotive repairs, panel beating, windscreen replacement.

    24 Transport and storages services - freight transport, courier services, furniture removal, bus services, taxis ship, rail and air transport, air and boat charters, cable cars pipeline operations, car parking operations, coal and wheat loaders, ship navigation services, container terminals, travel agencies, grain and cold storage.

    25 communication services - facsimile, postal telephone, telex, telegraph and teleprinter services, (not construction, see Code 22, and not equipment, see Code 18)

    26 Finance, investment, insurance and related services - banking, credit unions, building societies, money market dealings, finance companies, investment trusts, share brokering, superannuation, health funds and insurance products and services.

    27 Consultancy, property and business services not elsewhere classified - computer software (customised development, see Code 17), real estate agents and services, auction services, architectural, engineering and surveying services including marine and radio survey, legal, accounting and electronic data processing services, market and business consultancy, typing, copying and mailing services, pest control and cleaning services.

    28 Plant hire and leasing not elsewhere classified - all short term hire and leasing of industrial equipment (except transport equipment, see Code 24, and computer hardware, see Code 17), without operators and for less than 12 months and crane hire with operator.

    29 Health, education, museum and library services - hospitals and nursing homes, medical, dental, optical and veterinary services and ambulance services.

    30 Research, scientific and meteorology services - research in the agricultural, biological and social services, meteorological and services.

    31 Community services, recreational, personal and other services - police, prisons, fire brigades, sanitary and garbage disposal, film production, hotel and catering services, sport and recreation, creative arts, laundry and dry cleaning.
